The different interlinings in short:
The horsehair canvas and wollen hair canvas are usually applied in coats and jackets. They are handstitched to the fabric.
Bridal interlining can be used in the tops of bridal gowns and cocktaildresses. Mostly in combination with boning.
Vlieseline L11 is used for scaled garments or garmentparts when training to become a seamstress or sewing teacher.
Choosing Between Non-woven and Woven Interfacing Within the category of sew-in interfacings, we distinguish between two structures, each offering its own benefits for your garment:
-
Sew-in Vlieseline (Non-woven): These are the authentic "drawn" fleeces, such as L11 and M12. They are dimensionally stable, do not distort, and are perfect for collars, cuffs, and small details. Because they have no grain line, they can be cut very efficiently
-
Woven Interfacing (Cloth): These qualities feature a true warp and weft. A woven sew-in interfacing moves more naturally with the outer fabric and is often chosen for larger panels in jackets and coats. It gives the garment more "body" without making it feel stiff
When to use sew-in reinforcement? Using sew-in products is the safest method for materials sensitive to ironing, such as leather, silk, or coated fabrics. Furthermore, it is the preferred method for traditional tailoring: by incorporating the interfacing loosely (or using pad-stitching), the outer fabric retains its natural suppleness and avoids a "glued" appearance
Tips for processing
-
Securing: Always baste the interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric within the seam allowance before stitching
-
Grain line: Pay close attention to the grain line when using woven cloth; it should run parallel to the grain line of your outer fabric
-
Pre-treating: We recommend pre-treating woven interfacings made of natural materials (such as cotton) with steam to prevent shrinkage in the finished garment
