How does a seamripper work?

When the zipper of your coat is busted, you want to repair it. The first thing you grab is the seamripper.

With a seamripper you cut the thread that holds the zip in the coat.
The bit of a seamripper that cuts is in the bend between the long and short point. On the short point there usually is a ball to prevent the point from getting caught in the fabric.

Stick the long point in between the fabric and the zip, making sure you only catch the thread. You can also pick up one stitch and cut that.
